Buying Guide for External Microphones for iPhone
Choosing the best external microphone for your iPhone depends on several factors. This guide covers what to consider for optimal audio recording tailored to your needs.
Compatibility
Check for device compatibility. Some microphones include both Lightning and USB-C adapters, making them usable with all recent iPhones and iPads. Others support Android, laptops, or cameras. Verify plug type and interface support, especially for laptops and tablets.
Microphone Type and Connectivity
Wireless lavalier mics are popular for their portability and hands-free use. Make sure the wireless system provides a stable connection without latency within your recording environment (typical stable range varies 65 to 1000 feet depending on model). Bluetooth and plug-and-play models avoid app and pairing complications.
Sound Quality and Noise Reduction
Look for microphones with noise cancellation or active noise reduction chipsets to minimize background noise. Omnidirectional or cardioid pickups affect how the mic captures sound—omnidirectional picks sound from all around, while cardioid focuses mainly on the front.
Battery Life and Portability
Long battery life is crucial for extended shoots or outdoor recording. Some mics offer charging cases for multiple charges on the go. Also consider the mic’s size and weight if you need discreet, comfortable wear during long sessions.
Additional Features
- Wind Protection: Foam or furry covers help reduce wind noise outdoors.
- Real-time Monitoring: Some mics allow headphone monitoring to check audio quality live.
- Multi-Device Use: Mics with universal receivers streamline switching between phones, laptops, and cameras.
Selecting a microphone that balances these factors based on your content style will ensure professional-level audio for all your iPhone recordings.
